Kaja is Workplace Health and Safety Coordinator for Ramsay Healthcare’s John Flynn Private Hospital at Tugun on Queensland’s Gold Coast. With 72 hospitals around the country, Ramsay Healthcare is Australia’s largest private hospital operator and a respected sector leader.
‘I first heard about EVisuals from staff at another Ramsay hospital,’ said Kaja. ‘They were so impressed with EVisuals’ products and service that they recommended them to all Ramsay facilities.
‘Previously, we provided our staff with fire and evacuation training via an e-learning module – essentially a Powerpoint presentation – that people watched when they started their employment with us and every two years after that. Our Fire Wardens were re-trained every year.
‘But from our quarterly WHS audits, I knew that our staff’s retention of information from the training was very poor. For example, most people couldn’t even remember what the essential acronym RACE [Remove people from immediate danger, Alert others, Confine the fire and smoke, Extinguish or Evacuate] stands for.’[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Kaja got in touch with Matt Lynch, MD of EVisuals, who has over a decade’s experience as a professional fire fighter. Matt takes strategic command in large incidents and rescues and has repeatedly seen tragic outcomes due to inadequate preparation for emergency evacuation. In 2012, Matt founded EVisuals to increase preparedness and save lives, drawing on his extensive experience in training and community liaison.
‘Matt put together three wonderful, customised fire and evacuation training videos for us: one for all staff, one for floor wardens and one for our tenants – medical specialists who rent rooms or suites in the hospital,’ explained Kaja.
‘The videos range from six to 12 minutes in duration. They’re quick to view, but highly informative and memorable.
‘The feedback from staff and tenants has been overwhelmingly positive. Many people have told me it’s by far the best fire training they’ve ever had. They love that it’s personalised so they recognise the people and places in the videos.
‘We’ve been using EVisuals videos in staff training for more than a year. We’ve also made the videos available on our intranet, so staff can access them at any time. Many people revisit the videos between their mandatory training times.
‘It’s made a huge difference. I’ve seen great improvement in the results of our WHS audits,’ said Kaja.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]‘Matt was able to record everything for the videos in a single day on-site, because he was so well organised and efficient. Leading up to filming day, Matt consulted carefully with me and our Engineering Services Manager, who is also our Fire Safety Advisor, to produce a comprehensive plan for the recording process.
‘Consequently, our staff knew exactly what to expect on the day and many of them were keen to appear in the videos. We also have a great relationship with our local emergency services brigade, so we asked if they would like to participate in the videos too. They jumped at the opportunity.
‘Not only is Matt extremely professional and knowledgeable, he’s also personable. He put everyone at ease and remembered everyone’s names. He had a clear plan, but he was flexible, so when some of our key staff were busy, he adjusted his schedule and fit the filming around their availability.
‘Filming was actually good fun, we had a few laughs as well as getting the job done quickly, without inconvenience to staff or disturbance to any patients,’ said Kaja. ‘The only issue we encountered was that our maternity unit had no babies in it that day, which almost never happens! We had to use a doll in the videos instead.
‘Matt’s communication throughout the process has been outstanding: he’s always clear and quick to respond. His follow-up service has been excellent. We have a lot of new building and development occurring at our hospital and Matt’s been incredibly helpful about adjusting the videos.
‘After such a good experience with great outcomes, I have passed on Matt’s details to everyone I know in the healthcare sector. Of course, his products could also be used by other types of businesses or organisations wanting to ensure that they’re prepared for emergencies. I thoroughly recommend EVisuals.’[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=”408″ img_size=”full” style=”vc_box_rounded”][vc_column_text]‘The feedback from staff and tenants has been overwhelmingly positive.
